Olney Town Cricket Club Sunday Casuals/League v Westcroft on Sun 11 Jul 2010 at 2pm
Olney Town Cricket Club Lost by 5 runs

Match report A game in which a bowling masterclass was screwed up by a batting horror class !

Skipper Gratters won the toss and in not too bad a heat inserted the opposition which proved a stroke of genius as Westcroft were humbled to 30-6 thanks to some superb bowling from Brad Swingler and Oli Knowles backed up by stunning wicket keeping from wee Smail who proceeded to catch 3 of the top 4 batsmen before rounding it off with a chase for the ball and a one handed gloveless runout, and the Olney boys were well on their way to continuing their unbeaten league record.

With the Swingler and Knowles having completed their missions with honours, tail ender destroyer specialist Hurley was promoted to first change and bowled tidily adding to his seasons wicket haul with 3-0-20-1. With the westcroft batsmen looking to open up Hurley was replaced by Gallyot who unable to find his rhythm went for an eye watering 3-0-30-0 !!. The Brown combo took care of the other end bowling tidily and Westcroft were back in the pavilion for just 107 though with the number 9 and 10 contributing 52 of them the mood was one of missed opportunities!

After another legendary Amanda tea the OTCC opening partnership of Darkins and Hurley were sent to the middle and some consistent batting and a stylish host of boundaries from Hurley saw Olney swiftly move to 51-0 and with 10 wickets in hand needed just 57 runs for a routine victory.... but in a collapse of epidemic proportions we lost !! Heres how ......

Hurley having done his job again was sent back for 36 (incl 7 4's) before being caught. Run machine Berrill was snared by the ball of the innings which came back from a foot outside off to clip leg stump. But at 61-2 no panic buttons were being pressed yet however when Annie Oakley was despatched for 4, the clouds were gathering.

Still no worries with Mike Brown and Paul Gallyot to come however alarm bells starting clanging for England when they both holed out in the ddep for only 7 & 2 !!! With skipper Gratters arriving at the middle with Darkins well in it was a case of steering the ship home, well would have been if Darkins hadn't gently lofted the ball back to a grateful bowler! Oh S*it !

But with only 20 needed and still 4 wickets in hand surely OTCC would survive ?
Nah - Skipper Gratters holed out for 2, Smail went for a golden duck leaving Ben the Bream and Swingler with the task. Despite a rash of singles Bream (3) went and Swingler was bolwed for 6 and OTCC finished 5 runs short.

An utterly disastrous result which never looked on during the first innings of fielding brilliance! OTCC remain top of the league but could have been clear by a mile if one or two batsmen, well actually 9 batsmen had put brain before bat !

One small saving grace was the decision to bowl first bought in an extra 5 bonus points we wouldn't have got had we batted !

Onwards and Upwards .....
