Match report
Jugs all over the place !!!
After the first defeat of the season last week the Sunday boys bounced back with an emphatic win against Wicken. After winning the toss, which is becoming a welcome habit, Gratters decided to bat and OTCC were soon up and running with Berrill and regular opener Jewson at the helm ! With Wicken starting with only 9 players the spaces were being exploited ruthlessly. Berrill was first to his 50 with Jewson hanging onto his coattails steadily climbing to his own maiden 50. Berrill played onto his stumps trying to smack another ball into next week with the total score already on 90 in the 12th over. Jewson followed a few overs later for his career first 50 but gt himself out with shafeul ball watching as the fielder scored a direct hit onto the stumps !
Rory 'Vettori' Darkins came in at 3 for another masterful display of technically correct batting - crawling along to his first 50 in 56 balls but after the skipper offered to pay his subs if he made a century, hit the second 50 in just 32 on his way to an unbeaten 106 !! AND.... and..... readers get this....following pressure from his dad worried about the shame he was bringing on the family name, ALSO bought a jug to celebrate afterwards !!
With Jewson gone out of sorts and severly dehydrated Annie Oakley came to the crease and departed for 10 from 40 balls - contract talks are expected to be a long drawn out process !
With Oakley back in the pavilion desperately searching for an oxygen tent, Paul 'Labrador' Winter came to the middle for a rare appearance, however was greeted with howls of derision from the cheap seats (and the skipper) when he proceeded to block the first 3 balls when the floodgates had already been opened in a shameful display of average protection! Still he finished on 16 no and OTCC were back in the hut for an impressive 241-3.
Wicken came out facing an enormous task (by now a late player had turned up) and despite giving it a go early on, wickets started to tumble consistently with Oli Knowles his normal consistent self taking another 3 wickets and Lemon Rice bowling again tightly the other end.
Spinmeister Ross Knapper putting in his first appearance of the season bamboozled 3 more batsmen with clean bowled wickets coming in from about 7 feet outside the off stump to take the middle peg !
Darkins mopped up the last batsman and Wicken were undone for just 72 and a 169 run victory for the home side. OTCC remain top of the league but a toughie to come next week at Bletchley!
