Olney Town Cricket Club Olney Town CC 2nd XI v Stony Stratford 4th XI on Sat 26 Jun 2010 at 1:30pm
Olney Town Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
2nd XI take all 10 again to win by 5 and stay top of Division 5
A gloriously hot and sunny day meant another lost toss and a session in the field for the Twos but they set about their task with usual fervour – with Griff (7-4-8-2) joining the fray. With a good start (29-3) our tails were up, but a bit of resolve from Stony meant that became 70-3 and then 102-9 before a 10th wicket partnership from their numbers 8 and 11 looking as though they were batting a bit out of position – Stony 4XI finally all out for 122. The fielding standard bar was up and down all day but we stuck to our task and kept plugging away with some good catches held by Griff in particular – when two of their batsmen looked as though they were getting going holed catches straight to him. With some tight bowling, in particular the Brothers Griffin, Guts (9-5-8-2) and Griff (7-4-8-2). What the score book doesn’t tell is that one of my wickets was a 4ft tall 10 year old – turns out a four-step run up is quite effective – I must be getting old. It was extremely hot (I had to top up the sun screen at the first of two drinks breaks) and we worked a bit harder than we have become accustomed to but we stuck to the task and 122 was chaseable.
What followed was an extremely high quality tea – fresh fruit, great cakes, great pasta and noodles with smoked salmon.
Batting progressed well with a 37 opening partnership between Dave Hurley (6) and Guts (43), not being added to significantly by Griff (4). But when Guts was out, we were 74-3 – classic 2ndXI collapse territory but a new steely resolve was shown by our youngsters – with Jon Hurley smashing an impressive and confident 31 and Jack ‘Rainman’ Jewson posing (as if the photographers from Wisden Cricketer’s Monthly might have been in attendance) his way to 16 – a 39 run 5th wicket stand that proved vital as Jake Mynard and Ben Brown saw us home for a five wicket, 25 point victory. That leaves still on top, 9 points ahead of Eggington Foresters in second. Bring on New City (tomorrow, because I’m submitting this late – sorry busy week).
