Olney Town Cricket Club Sunday Casuals/League v Great Brickhill on Sun 22 Jun 2008 at 2pm
Olney Town Cricket Club Won by 69 runs
Match report
A marvellous win by the marauding Casuals !
Skipper Gratland won the toss (currently on a 90% success rate for tossing!) and decided to send the Casual batting warriors out to set the target. In conditions akin to the boxing day tsunami (only without any donations) the prodigy Goss and the coffin dodger Gallyot marched to the crease (well Gallyot sort of ambled out). In no time at all they were marcing back having accumulated the princely sum of 7 runs each. BG deciding to walk for a run out even though it was later confirmed he was infact not out on at least 2 counts ! Rearrange the words 'going marbles are' !!
Annie Oakley came to the crease but sadly continued his wretched run of form by departing for just the single. At 35-3 things were looking a tad grim until the monolithic Winter decided to take matters into his own hands. While all around him crumbled the labrador put the Brickhill attack to the sword.
Sam Howe came briefly to the crease and in his normal just smash everything style (worked last time for 112) sadly the ton was missing this time and he departed for the 12 to a very good catch.
Gray Macdonald came and went for 2 with the sprightly Baz refusing to accept a premature retirement, deciding to follow suit for the same score. At 55-6 things were heading in one direction - defeat.
Skipper Gratland had to play a skippers innings and my word what a fine innings it was (the author of this report shall remain anonymous) - with the effortless Winter at the other end, the portly pair amassed a match changing 96 partnership before the skipper sadly parted to wild applause (and the odd empty Stella bottle) from the pavilion steps, for 35. He later confirmed in the post match interview he has no intention of giving up his amateur status for the money in the pro game ! Principles were mentioned.
Dog Wrighting came to the crease for the last 3 overs and was immediately run ragged by Mr Winter who finished with yet another superb innings of 76 not out !
Casuals ending on a very relieved 165-8 from 55-6.
A fine tea followed ably made from a Mrs Harrison of Biddenham (the poor end of Bromham).
Out marched the Casuals for the attack like a bunch of starving rottweilers and immediately had Gt Brickhill in trouble at 1-1 soon to be 1-2 as Gray Macdonald continuing his 'getting better every week' status tore into the opening bats with aplomb. He started the match by taking the openers and finished it by taking the final wicket for stunning figures of 6.3-3-5-3 !! The coffin dodger Gallyot weighed in with his usual couple of wickets which left the way for Joe 'Lemon' Rice to smash his way through the tail with his second successive 3 wicket haul and brilliant figures of 5-1-12-3 despite an opening over that could have been bettered by Fanny Craddock wearing oven gloves !
Sam Howe got his bowling career off to a flyer with a wicket and conceding just 10 runs from his 6 overs and Sam James weighed in to continuew his 'wickets every game' run !
Skipper Gratland was given the word that although not needed he had better turn his arm over to placate the restless crowd who had paid good money to watch class - coming on for one over things were going quietly until ringleader Griffin in the cheap seats with the eyesight of a barn owl spotting Gratland warming up, broke away from the Spain v Italy european football dragging the entire motley crew of the OTCC bar to the veranda to hurl abuse at the skipper! Despite a heckle filled run-up, much guffawing ensued when Gratland sent down a bouncing bomb to fool the Brickhill attack with bladdered bar manager Lord incandescent with rage that a wide was not given on the 18th bounce. A maiden followed under extreme pressure. The crowd settled back into their seats and the stewards could relax. Chairman Harrison at the ground, has been formally asked to look into the possibility of ASBO's !
Special mention to Dog Wrighting who kept superbly throughout on a very difficult windy day and has made the gloves his own !
So 17 points it was to the Casuals (5 for Gt Brickhill) and Olney are back in the hunt for European honours. Who needs Ronaldo !
A good bunch of lads Gt Brickhill made the day a good day all round.
