Match report
Our first away day of the season, bought a last minute Friday night team shuffle, the resulting side pulling off something that id have never predicted had you told me that it would happen, missing 6 of the victorious side of the previous week, the week had again been a challenge for the skipper. However into the side came the returning traveller Richard James, Referee Brad Billson and first team debuts for Ollie Knowles and Aussie Dave Jeffrey and very welcome assistance from one of the skippers colleagues Steve Thomas. Also returning to the first team the vociferous Jack Jewson. With this side in mind the skipper was hoping to win the toss and stick the oppo and restrict them as best we could, with 3 front line seamers missing and also the spin of Pifle and Brown absent that seemed to be the best option. The toss of the coin fell kindly and we had our wish, first job done! However what was to follow was even more impressive, chatting at the toss to the oppo skipper it was apparent that they had similar problems having had to forfeit there 2nd eleven fixture in order to get 1 side out. Keeping and James opened the bowling, Keeping instantly into a good line and length extracting plenty of movement in the air and off the seam and so it was that he found the openers edge a good solid catch by Thomas behind the stumps claiming the first wicket. James at the other end was slightly more erratic, however he managed to produce a superb yorker that accounted for the other opener leaving them 21 for 2. Keeping took himself out of the attack after 10 overs introducing Young Ollie "Tony" Knowles. (thanks to Hallum for the new nickname, although at the fall of the next wicket he had to explain to all of the under 30's who Tony Knowles was) He was instantly into a rhythm showing the potential that has been reported to the skipper from both the Sunday side and also the sat 2nds, Ollie fully justified his selection claiming two wickets in his 6 over spell at the cost of just 10 runs. At the other end James was replaced by Aussie Dave "DJ" Jeffrey. DJ instantly showed his potential with the ball by claiming the prize scalp of the opposition skipper who was beginning to cut loose, excellently caught at point by the ever impressive Smail. In order to get some more overs in, DJ swapped ends and the wily spin of Brocky was introduced, consequently this bought about the end of the Clinton innings, Brock claiming three quick scalps and DJ claiming another 2 for himself, one of which an excellent stumping by Steve behind the sticks. An excellent display by the Olney bowlers and fielders stopping and catching anything that came near them and dismissing Clinton for a meagre 74 all out. Of which we contributed a top score of 23 extras! Special mentions to DJ and Ollie who both bowled impressively.
So for a second week in a row Olney found themselves chasing a low total, with a tricky spell to negotiate before tea the plan was to get to tea wicketless, with any form of total on the board, This was duly delivered by Hallum and Gutsy. Hallum displaying some excellent strokeplay ably supported by some lofted drives from the big man at the other end! At tea we were half way there with no wickets down. An excellent tea was provided by the Clinton tea ladies, one that will be hard to match this season and we went back out, unfortunately Gutsy managed to play down the wrong line to a Devlin delivery and was bowled, with 20 still needed the Skipper came out, determined not to give any points to Clinton. Hallum continued his dominance at the crease and with a boundary from the skipper and a straight drive from Hallum the game was over at 5.30! An excellent 46 no for Hallum making him the first player to 100 runs for the season. He really is looking in good touch!
Thanks again to Steve from work for assisting, lets hope he can rearrange his schedule to assist us again next week.
